Online Safety
At The Grange Academy, we are committed to ensuring that our pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
Why is Online Safety Important?
The internet is a valuable resource for learning, communication, and creativity. However, it also presents risks such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and threats to personal data. By teaching our pupils about online safety, we empower them to make informed decisions, protect themselves, and use technology responsibly.
How Do We Promote Online Safety?
At The Grange Academy, online safety is integrated into both our curriculum and school culture. Here’s how we ensure our pupils stay safe online:
Curriculum
- Dedicated Computing Units: Online safety is the first taught unit in our computing curriculum for Years 3 to 6, setting a foundation for safe digital habits.
- Ongoing Learning: Online safety principles are revisited throughout the year and reinforced across various subjects.
- Interactive Lessons: We use engaging resources, such as scenarios and discussions, to help pupils understand and apply online safety rules.
Education for the Whole School Community
- Pupils: Workshops, assemblies, and activities help pupils understand topics such as online privacy, cyberbullying, and responsible social media use.
- Parents: We provide parents with resources, newsletters, and guidance to support online safety at home.
- Staff: Teachers receive regular training on the latest online safety issues and strategies to support pupils effectively.
Clear Policies and Safeguards
- Acceptable Use Policies: All pupils and staff follow guidelines on the responsible use of technology and the internet.
- Filtered Internet Access: Our school’s network is protected by robust filters to block inappropriate content and ensure a safe online environment.
- Reporting Systems: Pupils are encouraged to speak to a trusted adult if they encounter anything online that makes them uncomfortable.
Key Topics We Cover
We help pupils understand and navigate a range of online safety issues, including:
- Protecting Personal Information: Knowing what is safe to share online.
- Cyberbullying Awareness: Recognizing, preventing, and reporting online bullying.
- Safe Social Media Use: Understanding age-appropriate platforms and respectful interactions.
- Online Scams and Phishing: Identifying and avoiding online threats to personal data.
- Digital Footprint: Understanding the lasting impact of online actions.
