Intent

At The Grange Academy, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in the holistic development of every child, promoting their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Our intent is for all children to find joy and fulfilment in physical activity by engaging in a broad and inclusive range of sports and activities that cater to different interests and abilities. We aim to foster a lifelong love of movement by encouraging pupils to explore and discover the type of physical activity that resonates with them, promoting not only fitness but also a sense of well-being and resilience.

Through our PE curriculum, we are committed to teaching the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and perseverance. We believe that physical education is a powerful tool to build self-confidence, develop leadership skills, and cultivate a real sense of achievement. At The Grange Academy, we strive to create an environment where every child can succeed, regardless of their starting point, and feel empowered to push their boundaries.

In addition, we promote positive attitudes towards health, hygiene, and fitness, ensuring that our pupils understand the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle both in and outside of school.

Implementation

At The Grange Academy, we implement a progressive and inclusive PE curriculum through the use of The Power of PE scheme of work, which ensures that children build on their skills year by year. Our curriculum is designed to provide a broad spectrum of physical activities, from traditional sports such as football, netball, and athletics to more specialised disciplines like tri-golf, tag rugby, and disability sports such as Boccia and seated push, which are integrated within our indoor athletics unit. This wide range of sports allows pupils to experience diverse forms of physical activity, encouraging them to find activities they enjoy and excel in.

Each unit of work is carefully planned and sequenced to develop both the physical and personal skills of every child. In Years 3 to 6, pupils follow a curriculum that focuses on building fundamental movement skills, refining sports-specific techniques, and enhancing teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. By gradually increasing the complexity of skills and activities from Year 3’s introduction to basic games and gymnastics through to Year 6’s mastery of advanced invasion games and athletics, pupils are challenged to push their physical and personal boundaries.

PE lessons take place both indoors and outdoors, utilising high-quality equipment and facilities. In addition to the core curriculum, all pupils participate in swimming lessons to develop life-saving skills and boost water confidence, with the goal of ensuring every child can swim by the end of Year 6.

The implementation of our PE curriculum is further enhanced by extracurricular clubs and inter-school competitions. These opportunities extend learning beyond the classroom and encourage pupils to further develop their skills, build resilience, and develop a lifelong love of physical activity.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum at The Grange Academy is seen in the physical, emotional, and social development of our pupils. Through a broad and balanced curriculum, pupils leave school with a strong foundation in physical literacy, ensuring they possess the skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead active, healthy lives.

By the end of Year 6, pupils will have experienced a wide variety of sports and physical activities, enabling them to make informed choices about how they continue to engage with physical activity throughout their lives. Regular participation in lessons and extracurricular opportunities fosters a positive attitude towards fitness, health, and well-being, which is reflected in the way our pupils embrace physical challenges with enthusiasm and resilience.

The focus on values such as teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship positively influences behaviour both in and out of the classroom. Pupils demonstrate a strong sense of fair play, mutual respect, and an understanding of the importance of collaboration. These qualities are evident not only in competitive environments but also in the way pupils approach group work, problem-solving, and peer support across the curriculum.

Our PE programme also contributes to the personal development of pupils by boosting their self-confidence and self-esteem. Pupils take pride in their progress, and by offering opportunities for success in a wide range of activities, all children, regardless of their ability, feel a sense of achievement. Regular assessments and tracking ensure that children make measurable progress in their physical abilities, and the skills they acquire serve as a foundation for their continued physical education in secondary school and beyond.

As a school, we see the long-term impact of our PE curriculum in the high levels of pupil engagement, improved mental and physical well-being, and the development of lifelong healthy habits.
